Florida’s Tiger Town History -

Tiger Town enjoys a rich history as part of the “Grapefruit League” that predates the building of the spring training facility. Constructed on the site of the Lodwick School, a World War II-era flight school where cadets trained from 1940 through 1945, there are historic vestiges of its early “Top Gun” days.

Several airplane hangars have been renovated that date back to the school’s World War II past and are now permanent markers of Tiger Town’s rich history. Since 1934, Michigan’s Detroit Tigers have been training in Lakeland, Florida. Previous Detroit Tiger training camps ranged from Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1902 to Hot Springs, Arkansas in 1908 and Gulfport, Mississippi from 1913-1915.
